Comfort Options

A More Comfortable Eye Exam Experience

We understand that certain parts of a traditional eye exam can be uncomfortable, such as dilating drops that blur your vision for hours or the startling puff of air during pressure testing. At Chinook Eye Center, we have invested in technology that makes your exam more pleasant without sacrificing the thoroughness your eyes deserve. These comfort options are available at every appointment.

Optomap Retinal Imaging: See Your Retina Without Dilation

The Optomap is an advanced digital imaging system that captures a detailed, ultra-wide photograph of your retina in less than a quarter of a second. That single image shows Dr. Perez the blood vessels, optic nerve, macula, and peripheral retinal tissue, the same structures traditionally examined through dilated pupils, without any drops, discomfort, or recovery time.

How Optomap Works

You place your chin on a rest, look into the device, and the Optomap captures the image with a brief, comfortable flash of light. The entire process takes seconds. There is no physical contact with your eye, no drops, and no waiting period. Your vision remains completely normal throughout and after the scan, so you can drive home immediately.

Why It Matters

The Optomap image gives Dr. Perez a comprehensive view of approximately 80 percent of your retina in a single capture. This is significantly more than a traditional ophthalmoscope can reveal. It also creates a permanent digital record that can be compared year over year to detect even subtle changes in your retinal health, which is important for monitoring conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma.

Your retina is the only place in your body where a doctor can directly observe living blood vessels. That means retinal imaging can reveal early signs of systemic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and high cholesterol, sometimes before you or your primary care provider are aware of them.

iCare Tonometry: Eye Pressure Without the Puff

Measuring intraocular pressure is a critical part of glaucoma screening, but the traditional method, a quick burst of air directed at the surface of your eye, is one of the most dreaded parts of an eye exam. The iCare tonometer replaces the air puff with a feather-light probe that contacts the cornea so gently most patients do not feel it at all.

The measurement takes a fraction of a second and requires no anesthetic drops. It is accurate, comfortable, and works well for patients of all ages, including children and anyone who is anxious about traditional pressure testing.

Comfort Without Compromise

These technologies are not shortcuts. They are better tools that deliver equal or superior diagnostic information compared to the traditional methods they replace, while making your experience significantly more pleasant. Dr. Perez believes you should never have to choose between a comfortable exam and a thorough one.
